MILLER FAMILY STORY

OUR STORY

My name is David Miller and I am the owner and founder of this great company. For about 10 years, I was the owner of full-service fire and water restoration and construction company, that did everything from design-build custom homes and, commercial/multifamily units, to restore large fire and water losses for insurance claims.

On July 4, 2011, just three weeks after my first daughter was born, an electrical outlet started to smolder in my basement and flames erupted. Within minutes my entire basement was in flames. After we were able to escape safely and the fire department arrived to put out the fire, we were faced with an unexpected reality that our home and all of our belongs were gone. As a contractor, who has been involved with many fire restoration jobs and having dealt with homeowners in this situation, I never imagined the emotional trauma and feelings one when personally experiencing such a tragedy.

To say the claim process went badly would be an understatement. I have dealt with many insurance adjusters over the years and know that working for them can be difficult, but I never had to deal with one on my own claim.

I’m not sure if my adjuster didn’t like the fact I wasn’t a typical homeowner who didn’t understand how the process works, or that I was an experienced contractor who has dealt with many fire claims, but we did not see eye to eye on what needed to be repaired and/or replaced. My business model was to fix it right the first time no matter if it’s your house or your customer’s house; either way it has to be done right.

I use the same estimating software insurance companies use, and I am always very detail oriented and precise when it comes to estimating repairs. My adjusters repair estimate came in at roughly $34,000 to clean and replace a few items such as trim, doors, drywall, and insulation. After my estimate was completed, my total came in at roughly $120,000 to properly remove and replace the damaged areas affected by the fire and water damage from the fire department.

I knew my estimate was the right way to fix my house and I was going to do whatever it took to successfully achieve the results I wanted. Not only did I realize that as a homeowner, you have little power or leverage to fight a disagreement on your own, but my adjuster was doing whatever he could to frustrate me into accepting his low-ball offer. I refused and spent the next five months battling, going up the chain of command, and even getting my the adjuster fired. I finally reached the point where someone was listening.

A new adjuster came in rebid the scope of the estimate and was just $3,000 less than what I had originally bid. I could finally start putting my family’s life back together. Not only was negotiating the repair estimate long and frustrating, getting fully compensated for my inventory and additional living expenses (ALE) was another matter. Long story short, because of my drive for details and a willingness to never to give up until I received every penny owed to me, I ended up with an extra $50,000 on top of the $60,000 the company paid to replace my personal property and extra incurred expenses.

This grueling experience left me as stressed and frustrated as I have ever been. A lot of people would have caved and accepted what was offered under such circumstances, but I am the type of person who never gives up– no matter how difficult it gets.

Becoming a Public Adjuster would allow me to make sure homeowners and business owners can have a fighting chance against their insurance companies.

“Becoming a Public Adjuster would allow me to make sure homeowners and business owners can have a fighting chance against their insurance companies.”

After my claim was completed and life started getting back to normal, I ran into a Public Adjuster while working on some developments in Chicago. Prior to this, I did not know such a profession even existed. Since that day I realized I wanted to make a difference and make sure no one has to go through the same battles and frustrations that I had to go through with my claim.

I realize the average homeowner in my situation would not have been able to fight and stand up for themselves; becoming a Public Adjuster allows me to make sure homeowners and business owners can have a fighting chance when treated unfairly by their insurance companies. After doing a little research, some schooling, certifications, and leaving the  construction business, I formed Miller Public Adjusters with the goal of doing whatever it takes to level the playing field on behalf of policyholders and stop insurance companies from treating their policyholders unsatisfactorily.
